In 1997, the Meninas Cantoras de Petrópolis took part in a special edition of the television program Planeta Xuxa, which celebrated Christmas and the presenter’s pregnancy at the same time. Onstage, the choir made way for the man of the hour, the actor Luciano Szafir. The choir was made up of girls between roughly 9 and 15 years old, dressed like living dolls: black patent-leather shoes, white knee socks, navy-blue velvet dresses, pale long-sleeved shirts with collars buttoned at the neck, sometimes with a little bow, sometimes with an enormous crucifix.

At the height of their fame, the singing girls appeared on television programs, from A Praça é Nossa to Fantástico, recorded with musicians such as Ivan Lins and Simone, and performed all over the country. Producer George Martin, who worked with the Beatles, said the girls performed “as if they were angels.”

“It was a magical world,” recalls Aline Barino, a member of the choir. The girls enjoyed a freedom they did not have at home. They were given permission, by their parents and by school, to miss classes and enchant crowds across the country.

Places in the group, between 30 and 40 depending on the season, became coveted and envied in Petrópolis, a city in the mountain region of Rio de Janeiro state. The choice of members lay in the hands of the conductor and teacher Marco Aurélio Xavier, who founded the group in 1976, when he was 24, at a Catholic school in the city; today, he is 74. It was a girls-only choir, according to the conductor, “because for 2,000 years women were forbidden to sing.”

Amid the strict discipline of rehearsals, there were painful situations, Cristina Fibe reports in this month’s issue of piauí. The girls were subjected to demands akin to those made by sports coaches and perfectionist ballet teachers who place excessive pressure on their pupils, even when they are not yet old enough to cope with it. But there are more serious cases, involving psychological harassment and sexual abuse.

piauí spoke with seventeen women, now between 24 and 60 years old, who took part in the choir. All told their stories for the first time, always in recorded interviews, conducted either in person or by video.

“Ele me pegou pelo ombro e me jogou no chão”, conta a integrante. Algumas delas chegavam a molhar a própria roupa.

In the conductor’s disciplinary decalogue, the girls were forbidden to approach the celebrities they encountered in theater and television-studio dressing rooms. Once, during a long rehearsal before recording a CD, Xavier forbade them to sit down for about four hours. Exhausted, one of them pretended to scratch her leg or tie her sneaker just so she could bend her knees a little. The master grew angry. “He grabbed me by the shoulder and threw me to the floor,” the member says. The girls were afraid even to ask to go to the bathroom. Some would wet their own clothes. “It was better to be embarrassed in public than to face the conductor and say you needed to pee,” Barino recalls.

Another member, who belonged to the group from the mid-1990s to the early 2000s, says that when the conductor drove her home, he would first stop the car on some dark street and sexually abuse her, when the girl had not yet turned 14. “Full-on touching, really, like, seriously,” she says.

The conductor’s affectionate exchanges with the girls were a constant, and the contest for the attention of the master, known for his mood swings and his shouting, became a way of securing a special place and of being treated better. On bus trips, some of those who failed to win the privilege of sitting beside Xavier or on his lap would gather around him, stroking the conductor’s head.

It was on one of those outings that Carla Magno, now a writer and journalist, began to suspect that something in that choir was out of order. “The first time I became aware that something strange had happened to me was when, on one of those trips, I was chosen to sit next to him,” she said. Carla was between 12 and 13 years old. “During the night, he took my hand and put it on top of his penis. I had never touched a penis, obviously. I was a child.”

Now retired, Xavier continues to live in Petrópolis. piauí contacted him by telephone on April 28. He answered politely. In a later message, which explained in detail that the report would address accusations made by former choir members, he replied that he would give an interview the following day. Instead, he blocked the contact on Instagram and WhatsApp.
