In response to the Iran war and its consequences, the United Arab Emirates has announced a significant shift in its regional strategy, adopting an approach more heavily focused on security concerns.

The UAE, traditionally known as one of the region’s stable hubs for trade, finance, and investment, found itself affected by a war it had tried to keep at arm’s length.

Iran’s attacks on Emirati territory exposed vulnerabilities that appear to have challenged the country’s long-standing model of “peace through trade.” The attacks showed that such a model is not sustainable without advanced and powerful defensive capabilities. This has pushed Abu Dhabi toward strengthening military ties with its principal partners, especially the United States and Israel.

At the same time, the war also revealed the limits of political and economic interdependence, prompting Abu Dhabi to accelerate its move toward strategic autonomy so that it can preserve its flexibility in a rapidly changing Middle East.

To gain greater freedom of action in pursuing its political, economic, and energy interests, Abu Dhabi has reduced the extent of its commitments to, or reliance on, regional blocs.

The strengthening of ties with partners such as India, Ukraine, Greece, Cyprus, and Ethiopia also shows that the UAE’s regional role in the postwar period is increasingly focused on widening the reach of its foreign-policy influence. The country also appears to be seeking to counter emerging regional alignments that place its Gulf rival, Saudi Arabia, alongside Turkey, Egypt, and Pakistan.

These developments point to a broader reset of Emirati foreign policy and suggest that the country’s regional role after the Iran war may differ markedly from its previous position.

Iran’s unprecedented attacks on vital sites in the UAE have prompted Abu Dhabi to move away from its pragmatic foreign policy, traditionally one built on balancing cautious diplomacy with economic interests.
