Georgia Plans to Tighten Residence Permit Rules for Foreigners
Georgia is moving to harden its migration rules by restricting residence permits for foreign students and spouses, criminalizing sham marriages, and expanding police powers against illegal migration.

Власти Грузии подготовили поправки в миграционное законодательство, которые усложнят получение вида на жительство для иностранных студентов и супругов граждан страны. Кроме того, расширятся полномочия МВД в борьбе с нелегальной миграцией. Об этом сообщается на сайте МВД.
The Georgian authorities have prepared amendments to migration legislation that would make it harder for foreign students and spouses of Georgian citizens to obtain residence permits. The powers of the Ministry of Internal Affairs to combat illegal migration would also be expanded. This was reported on the ministry’s website.
🔵 Подробности. Власти хотят признать фиктивные браки ради ВНЖ или гражданства уголовным преступлением, за которое может грозить до двух лет лишения свободы. Иностранцев смогут депортировать с запретом на въезд в Грузию.
🔵 Details. The authorities want to classify sham marriages entered into for the sake of a residence permit or citizenship as a criminal offense, punishable by up to two years’ imprisonment. Foreign nationals could be deported and barred from entering Georgia.
Ужесточатся и правила для учебного ВНЖ. Его смогут получать только студенты аккредитованных учебных заведений. Документ смогут аннулировать за нарушение академических требований, несоблюдение условий трудоустройства или длительное отсутствие в стране. Для поступления в грузинские вузы потребуется языковой сертификат или экзамен по иностранному либо государственному языку.
The rules for student residence permits will also be tightened. Only students enrolled in accredited educational institutions will be able to obtain them. The document could be revoked for violations of academic requirements, failure to comply with employment conditions, or prolonged absence from the country. Admission to Georgian universities will require a language certificate or an examination in a foreign or the state language.
Кроме того, МВД получит право проводить оперативно-розыскные мероприятия для борьбы с нелегальной миграцией. Судебные процедуры по миграционным делам хотят ускорить: сократить сроки обжалования и рассмотрения дел, а часть из них рассматривать без устного слушания.
In addition, the Ministry of Internal Affairs will be given the right to carry out operational-search measures to combat illegal migration. The authorities want to speed up judicial procedures in migration cases by shortening the time limits for appeals and case review, and by allowing some cases to be considered without an oral hearing.
