Three Faces of Death in Weda Bay
The piece argues that repeated deaths from overwork, suicide, and workplace accidents in Indonesia’s Weda Bay nickel industrial zone reveal a chronic, systemic failure of occupational health and safety.

Everything that lives will surely die. Yet in the nickel-mining industrial zone of PT Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) and PT Weda Bay Nickel (WBN), many deaths come far too soon. Most of the victims are workers still at the beginning of their productive years, with aspirations and hopes that ought still to stretch far ahead of them. There are three faces of death that greet them too early: karoshi, suicide, and workplace accidents. All three recur again and again, pointing to a systemic problem of Occupational Health and Safety (K3) in the mining-industrial zone that has become chronically entrenched.
This report once again highlights the most horrifying consequence of poor working conditions in one of Indonesia’s largest nickel industrial zones, PT IWIP. We hope it can encourage other, deeper and more comprehensive research to reveal working conditions across Indonesia’s other nickel-industry centers.
