Amid Sudan’s war, grassroots communal kitchens evolved from improvised meals into networks of solidarity that fed, clothed, treated, and helped hold communities together.

Sudan’s Communal Kitchens: When People Met War with Mutual Aid
Khartoum - The journalist Osman al-Jundi did not expect that the initiative he launched in front of his home in the al-Hattana neighborhood, north of Omdurman, would become a prominent model of community resilience in Sudan.
With the outbreak of the war, which will complete its third year by mid-April of this year, al-Jundi began offering tea and zalabia to the neighborhood’s residents under the name “Fakkat Reeq,” a simple morning meal to help them endure as markets closed and citizens lost their sources of income. As the days passed, he found himself responsible for dozens of families that had come to depend on the initiative.
Osman al-Jundi tells Al Jazeera Net that when the “Fakkat Reeq” communal kitchen was launched, and as the number of beneficiaries increased day by day, he began to have real fears about the project’s ability to continue in the absence of support and funding, especially since the whole of society had been affected by the war.
Yet, according to al-Jundi, the mutual aid among Sudanese people and the strength of their social bonds helped change the course of the initiative. It quickly grew from a simple meal of “tea and zalabia” into eight communal kitchens bearing the same name, from which thousands of people benefited.
He added that these kitchens did not stop at providing breakfast and lunch, but expanded to include clothing, medicine, and other support projects, with backing from government and private institutions, as well as contributions from the local community and Sudanese abroad.
Social Cohesion
Al-Jundi notes that the number of kitchens affiliated with the initiative has fallen from eight to just three, as life in Khartoum has gradually begun to return to normal, many residents have gone back to work, and a number of displaced people have left for their own areas. He explains that the support the kitchens receive is now being directed toward distributing monthly provisions to widows, orphans, and families too dignified to ask for help, as well as providing treatment.
Al-Jundi believes that Sudanese food culture played an important role in their endurance throughout the years of war. Smiling, he says, “Sudanese people have a great capacity to adapt to circumstances. Balila and lentils were the main meals during the war, and perhaps that would not happen in other countries that faced similar conditions.”
He added that the culture of displacement camps did not spread widely in Sudan despite the devastating war, attributing this to the strength of social cohesion: society remained mutually supportive and compassionate, which eased the war’s burden on citizens.
He also pointed out that displaced people who stayed in shelters within Omdurman’s neighborhoods became part of the local communities; relations between them and residents even developed into marriages and ties of kinship by marriage.
Al-Jundi’s initiative was no exception in the Sudanese scene. “Takaya,” communal kitchens, soon became a broad social phenomenon across Khartoum’s neighborhoods and in other cities, led voluntarily by individuals and groups seeking to soften the impact of the war in the country.

In a related context, the lawyer Suhanda Abdel Wahab emerged as one of the active figures in charitable work. During the past Eid al-Fitr, she was able to raise more than 100 million Sudanese pounds, about $30,000, within hours to provide clothing for orphans.
Suhanda makes use of her social media pages to present her initiatives, relying on transparency in disclosing the amount of donations she receives through her bank account and publishing purchase invoices, which has earned her considerable trust among her followers.
Suhanda has launched many initiatives, most notably the distribution of Ramadan baskets to widows and orphans, and the provision of intravenous fluids during the outbreak of dengue fever and cholera in Khartoum State several months ago.
Although her voluntary activity has recently diminished, she remains present at every new challenge, hastening to launch initiatives that draw wide engagement.

Rizqa launched the “King of the Smile” initiative after the war broke out. It consists of two communal kitchens that provide food and clothing to those in need in the Umm Badda area west of Omdurman, as well as to hospitals, and also provide meals to students during examination periods.
The page is active throughout the day, broadcasting daily clips that document what the initiative and its supporting bodies have provided. The initiative has received support from inside Sudan and abroad, and has offered extensive services to thousands of families.

In the Shambat al-Hilla neighborhood of Bahri, north of Khartoum, residents relied entirely on communal kitchens during the siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces, when many were unable to leave the area until the army regained control of it.
Sayed al-Siraj Obeid, from the Mahas communal kitchen, told Al Jazeera Net that the southern Shambat area alone had six kitchens funded by sons and daughters of the neighborhood at home and abroad. He noted that these kitchens continued to provide food, water, and treatment for the sick throughout the years of war, and also distributed medicines to those suffering from chronic illnesses.
He added that there is a charitable pharmacy established by people from the neighborhood and sustained by residents’ donations, where surplus medicines are collected and handed over to the pharmacy’s administration to be distributed to those in need.
As life in the neighborhood gradually returns to normal, with water and electricity available and markets and employees resuming their work, the role of the kitchens has diminished. Their activity is expected to stop within the next two months, according to Obeid, who attributes the endurance of Shambat’s residents during the war to the role of the kitchens and to the support given by people from the neighborhood abroad to their families.
Although the role of communal kitchens has receded in some areas as conditions have improved, they remain among the most striking forms of popular solidarity in Sudan during the war. They were not merely initiatives to feed the needy; they formed a social safety net that helped protect thousands of families, and affirmed the meaning of a society’s ability to face the harshest crises when its people stand together.
