Health Ministry Clarifies After Concerns Over Missing Indicators in NFHS-6 Fact Sheet

The Health Ministry says the recently released NFHS-6 fact sheet is only an initial data release, not the full report, amid criticism that key indicators used to assess major government schemes are absent.

New Delhi: After concerns surfaced over the “disappearance” of several important indicators from the report, or fact sheet, of the National Family Health Survey (NFHS-6), the Union Health Ministry has issued a clarification.

According to a Times of India report, public health experts had sharply criticized the central government after several important indicators, such as clean fuel, sanitation, and anemia, were not included in the recently released NFHS-6 report.

It is worth noting that these indicators have been used to assess the impact of government schemes such as the Ujjwala Yojana and the Swachh Bharat Mission.

In response, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has said that the NFHS-6 fact sheet released in recent days is not the complete report. It should be regarded only as the initial phase of the report.

On the omission of anemia data, the ministry said there had been concerns about the accuracy of the capillary blood sampling technique used in earlier surveys, and therefore blood, or hemoglobin, testing has not been included in this one.

Officials said anemia estimates will now be included in the Indian Council of Medical Research’s diet and biomarker survey. That survey uses venous blood samples, blood drawn from a vein, and its results are expected to be more accurate.

Significantly, the government’s clarification has come at a time when it is facing criticism following reports that these crucial indicators are missing from the NFHS-6 fact sheet.

It should be noted that this report includes 101 important parameters related to health, nutrition, and population. Officials have therefore rejected the allegation that important indicators have been removed from NFHS-6.

Officials say the fact sheet is only the first stage of data release, not the final NFHS-6 report.

According to the newspaper, they further said that the detailed national report to be released later will include additional indicators, analysis, and information related to methodology.

Notably, the NFHS, the country’s largest health survey, is conducted by the International Institute for Population Sciences (IIPS) under the supervision of the Union Health Ministry. The NFHS-6 survey was conducted in 2023-24, and the NFHS-5 survey in 2019-21. The NFHS-6 fact sheets were released on May 29, 2026.

It may be recalled that The Wire had earlier reported that NFHS-6 does not include certain important indicators that could have revealed the performance of at least two flagship schemes of the Narendra Modi government.

One of the missing indicators relates to access to clean fuel for cooking, data for which is not included in the released report. In addition, figures for the sex ratio at birth and infant and child mortality rates are also missing.

However, both of these appear in the government’s other methods of data collection.
