To Understand the Holocaust Industry
The essay argues that the political manipulation of Holocaust memory has become a central instrument for defending Israeli state violence, disciplining criticism, and preserving Zionist hegemony over Jewish identity.

In The Holocaust Industry, the Jewish American author Norman Finkelstein reveals something that has become commonplace in contemporary debate: that defenders of the State of Israel make political use of Jewish suffering in the Holocaust in order to justify its crimes in the Middle East. Although published in 2000, before the “War on Terror” and the global rise of the far right, the book is extraordinarily relevant for understanding the activity of the Holocaust Industry during the genocide in Gaza that began in October 2023. Its modus operandi remains basically the same.
For example, references to the Jewish Holocaust were repeatedly used by Israeli leaders to explain the attack by the Palestinian resistance on October 7, 2023, which left more than a thousand Israelis dead. At a ceremony for International Holocaust Remembrance Day held on January 27, 2024, Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, held up an Arabic copy of Mein Kampf to criticize the case brought by South Africa before the International Court of Justice, which accused Israel of committing genocide in Gaza. “In whose name did they [the South Africans] come? In the name of Hamas - in the name of the ‘new Nazis’ - who came to commit genocides against us,” Netanyahu said.1
In the Zionist representation, the Israeli colonial history of ethnic cleansing and apartheid against the Palestinians as the explanatory reason for the anticolonial violence carried out by Palestinian guerrillas was replaced by a narrative in which Hamas is seen as the contemporary bearer of an irrational, ancestral hatred of Jews - now directed against the State of Israel. Thus the attack was reduced to yet another terrorist act aimed at building a “free Palestine from the river to the sea,” with the ultimate objective of expelling all Jews from the territory.
The manipulation of the historic slogan of the Palestinian resistance, which claims Palestine as an indivisible nation between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, in opposition to its partition imposed by Western imperialism, has become one of the Zionist elites’ principal cultural weapons for reviving fear of the Holocaust in the twenty-first century. The effect has been the censorship of signs of solidarity with Palestine. In Germany, the phrase was banned. In Sao Paulo, an artist was pressured by the Zionist movement, with the help of the police and politicians, to remove the words “from the river to the sea” from a work he had painted on the side wall of a building occupied by homeless activists at the corner of Paulista and Reboucas avenues.
The instrumentalization of this Palestinian slogan in order to frame it as an antisemitic manifesto is an example of the “semiotic war,” as Edward Said called it,2 waged against the Palestinians and of which the Holocaust Industry is a part. Alongside the entire orientalist discourse that seeks to dehumanize Arab and Muslim peoples, its aim is to justify Israeli colonialism within the strategy of Western imperialism for the Middle East. The most powerful instrument at work during the genocide in Gaza is the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance definition of antisemitism, known by its English acronym IHRA, which equates criticisms of Israel with forms of antisemitism. Among them is the comparison between Israel’s actions and those of the Nazi regime in the Second World War. The analogy with the tormentors of European Jews is intolerable to contemporary Zionists.
I myself always avoided drawing the Holocaust close to the violence promoted by Israel against the Palestinians, so as not to block dialogue about the situation in Palestine. Yet in an interview given on October 8, 2023, I agreed with a journalist’s question about the similarities between the Warsaw Ghetto and the Gaza Strip.3 In response, I received a death threat from a former university professor in Sao Paulo who works as an adviser to one of the most important organizations in the Israeli lobby in Brazil. This is an extreme example of the regime of intimidation created by the Holocaust Industry.
In any case, that virulent attitude led me to reflect on whether I was not excessively relativizing the genocide suffered by my ancestors - some eight hundred people named Huberman appear in the registry of the dead of the Shoah,4 a Hebrew term meaning catastrophe and used to refer to the Jewish Holocaust. Was I betraying the memory of the oppression suffered by my own group in the effort to stand in solidarity with the oppressed of today, the Palestinians?
The answer came within a few months, when the world began to associate the images of Palestinians in Gaza, suffering severe hunger as a result of the siege imposed by the State of Israel, with survivors of the Nazi concentration camps. The comparison between the Nazi and the Israeli genocides was not only possible, but useful for understanding the forms of action of fascist regimes that pursue projects of racial purity.
The force of that comparison was put to the test when, in February 2024, Lula made it: “What is happening in the Gaza Strip to the Palestinian people has not existed at any other historical moment. In fact, it has. When Hitler decided to kill the Jews.” The Brazilian president was accused of antisemitism by the Israeli government and declared persona non grata. Israel’s foreign minister, Israel Katz, summoned the Brazilian ambassador, Frederico Meyer, for a formal and public reprimand at Yad Vashem, Jerusalem’s Holocaust Museum - an uncommon practice. The act was considered a humiliation by the Lula government, which froze diplomatic relations with Israel.
To demonstrate his displeasure with the Brazilian government, the Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, invited former president Jair Bolsonaro to visit the country. Bolsonaro, however, was prevented from traveling because his passport had been retained in connection with the investigation into the attempted coup d’etat in 2022. In his place went the far-right governors Tarcisio de Freitas, of Sao Paulo, and Ronaldo Caiado, of Goias. On their return, they promptly adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, encouraging other Bolsonarist governors to make the same decision.
At least twelve states, the Federal District, and Brazilian municipalities such as Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro have already accepted the IHRA definition during the genocide in Gaza. Its adoption is educational and cultural in character; that is, people cannot be criminally punished on its basis, but its conception of antisemitism can be used in school and artistic materials, as in the teaching of the Holocaust and of the Palestine-Israel question in public schools. This is reportedly happening in Sao Paulo, with permission from the Tarcisio government, through the work of StandWithUs Brasil, the main defender of the IHRA in the country. The manipulation of the history of the Holocaust, by focusing excessively on Jewish suffering and excluding the other victims of the Nazi regime, as well as by connecting it directly to the dynamics of the Palestine-Israel question in order to justify Israeli crimes, is part of the modus operandi of the Holocaust Industry in the United States revealed by Finkelstein.
In early 2025, Bolsonaro’s former minister and federal deputy Colonel Eduardo Pazuello (PL-RJ) introduced, at the request of the Israeli Embassy, a bill that inserted the IHRA definition of antisemitism into the Brazilian Penal Code.5 In March 2026, a few days after Pazuello withdrew his bill from consideration, the center-left federal deputy Tabata Amaral (PSB-SP), who has already taken part in several events of the Holocaust Industry, led a new bill, also signed by far-right politicians - particularly those aligned with the evangelical caucus - for the adoption of the IHRA in Brazilian public policy.6
Around the world, the use of this instrument has not served to combat racial discrimination against Jews, but to censor activists in solidarity with the Palestinian cause - including Jews.7 Professor Reginaldo Nasser and I, who coordinate the International Conflict Studies Group (Geci) at PUC-SP, were called by the institution’s maintaining foundation, Fundacao Sao Paulo (Fundasp), to answer accusations of antisemitism because of posts on Geci’s Instagram page about the history of Hamas.
The anonymous accusation, made by PUC-SP students, was mediated by the Jewish Federation of the State of Sao Paulo (Fisesp). As a result of the administrative proceeding, Fundasp partially adopted the IHRA definition of antisemitism, becoming the only Brazilian university to assume such a stance - spreading fear of persecution through the academic community. Other people in solidarity with Palestine, such as the Jewish journalist Breno Altman, who wrote the flap copy for this book, have also been falsely accused of antisemitism on the basis of the IHRA definition.8
Faced with this growing pressure on Brazilian civil society and the government, in July 2025 President Lula decided to remove Brazil from its position as an observer state at the IHRA. The withdrawal opened yet another crisis with the Brazilian Holocaust Industry, which interpreted the gesture as an abandonment of the memory of the Shoah. The decision was justified by the intense pressure in favor of the legal use of the IHRA definition of antisemitism. Lula had repeatedly been accused of antisemitism by the Israeli lobby in Brazil for his criticisms of the Israeli genocide in Gaza.
To cool the situation down, in January 2026 the president assigned the human rights minister, Macae Evaristo, to visit Bom Retiro, Sao Paulo’s traditional Jewish neighborhood. The minister visited the Holocaust Memorial and Casa do Povo, an antifascist Jewish institution created in 1946. That same week, Evaristo and Minister Gleisi Hoffmann met with leaders of the Jewish community in Brazil around the theme of “confronting antisemitism in Brazil.”
The meeting included representatives of the Zionist and anti-Zionist left, rabbis, academics, politicians, and members of the Holocaust Industry: the brothers Claudio Lottenberg, president of the Israelite Confederation of Brazil (Conib), and Fernando Lottenberg, commissioner of the Organization of American States (OAS) for Monitoring and Combating Antisemitism, as well as Carlos Reiss, general coordinator of the Holocaust Museum of Curitiba. Reiss was the Brazilian representative at the IHRA and was a major critic of the federal decision to leave the body.
The meeting reveals two fundamental dynamics of the Holocaust Industry discussed by Finkelstein. First, it shows how, amid a genocide perpetrated by the State of Israel, the question of antisemitism and Holocaust memory remained more relevant and received more attention from the Brazilian government than the victims of the ongoing massacre: the Palestinians. During the two years of genocide in Gaza, the Palestinian community and the movements of solidarity with the cause were not received by the top tier of the federal executive for a meeting on the same level as the one held with members of the Jewish community.
Antisemitism is in fact growing globally, as can be seen in attacks on synagogues and Jewish cemeteries in Brazil and in the attack at Bondi Beach, in Australia, during the celebration of Hanukkah, which caused the deaths of fifteen people. Yet cases of antisemitism receive disproportionate attention in relation to episodes of anti-Palestinian racism, which justify the complete devastation of the Gaza Strip and have caused the deaths of at least 70,000 Palestinians. Not to mention the tolerance toward those who still deny the ongoing genocide and the Nakba, the great catastrophe of the Palestinian people that occurred between 1947 and 1949, when around 750,000 Palestinians were expelled and five hundred villages were destroyed by Zionist militias in the process of building the State of Israel.
Another phenomenon observed by Finkelstein and present in the Brazilian context is the recent strengthening of Holocaust memory as a product of the Palestine-Israel question. The Holocaust Museum of Curitiba opened in 2011, followed by the Holocaust Memorial of Sao Paulo in 2017 and the Memorial to the Victims of the Holocaust in Rio de Janeiro in 2023. The city of Sao Paulo also has the Jewish Museum, inaugurated in 2021, which likewise addresses the history of the Holocaust. This is without mentioning the Center for Jewish Culture, maintained by Unibes Cultural.
In the capital of Sao Paulo, there are not two or three major exhibition centers devoted exclusively to the memory of Black or Indigenous people. The Afro Brazil Museum is directed toward the production of Black Brazilian artists, often with political themes, but its central aim is not to narrate the history of slavery or the persistence of apartheid structures in Brazil. Moreover, only in 2023 was the Museum of Indigenous Cultures inaugurated, the first in the city dedicated to original peoples. Other immigrant communities more numerous in Sao Paulo, such as the Armenian, Italian, Arab, and Japanese communities, do not mobilize memory politically in the same way as the Jewish community.
This museological movement around the Holocaust coincides with the strengthening of the movement of solidarity with Palestine in Brazil and with a context in which the Palestine-Israel question has become an increasingly present issue in Brazilian public debate. Diplomatic crises between the countries under Workers’ Party administrations, the growth of the evangelical segment, and the ideological alignment observed under the Jair Bolsonaro government all contribute to this.9 The manipulation of antisemitism has become an instrument of the Brazilian far right, driven by Zionist evangelicals and the Holocaust Industry, to contain the Lula government’s bonds of solidarity with Palestine. The objective of the Holocaust Industry is not the preservation of Jewish memory, but its manipulation as an instrument of geopolitical power.
A Indústria do Holocausto no centro da aliança Estados Unidos-Israel
The Holocaust Industry at the Center of the United States-Israel Alliance
Noam Chomsky’s The Fateful Triangle: The United States, Israel and the Palestinians10 had revealed, in 1983, Israel’s strategic importance for US imperialism during the Cold War. In an analysis that remains valid today, Chomsky notes that the alliance between the countries is not based on values such as democracy and freedom, but on confronting common enemies - pan-Arabism led by Gamal Abdel Nasser and, after 1979, revolutionary Islamism led by Iran - that obstruct US access to the region’s oil reserves.
By pointing, in this work, to the political and economic exploitation of the history of the Holocaust by the US Zionist establishment and the State of Israel, Finkelstein contributed decisively to revealing other pillars that sustain the alliance between the United States and Israel. By revealing part of the internal dynamics of US society that undergird the “special friendship” between the countries, his publication enters into dialogue with that of John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt, which in 2007 drew attention to the activity of the Israeli lobby in the corridors of Washington.11
The lobbyists primarily pressure the executive and legislative branches of the United States, while also influencing the major media, in order to shape US foreign-policy decision-makers in favor of Israeli interests in the context of the “War on Terror.” Mearsheimer and Walt go so far as to argue that the invasion of Iraq occurred chiefly because of pressure from the Israeli lobby and that it ran counter to the US national interest. A similar argument has been used to explain the joint aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, begun in February 2026.
Although the role of the Israeli lobby must be analyzed carefully so as not to exaggerate it, Mearsheimer and Walt’s work offers an institutional framing complementary to Finkelstein’s book on the Holocaust Industry - not by chance, both publications met resistance from the US publishing market, which did not wish to pick a fight with powerful interests in Washington and New York. Finkelstein, however, addresses the moral content that underlies this alliance and constitutes popular consent around it, beyond the lobby of the oil bourgeoisies, which aims to seize the fields of the Middle East, and the military-industrial complex, which has robust investments in Tel Aviv.
The Holocaust Industry represents the United States’ alliance with Israel as the defense of the Jewish state under threat of a new Holocaust - and, by extension, of Western civilization as a whole. At the root of this construction lies the idea of “Judeo-Christian civilization,” defended by Protestant Zionists since the nineteenth century and which became a term to designate the moral, political, and ideological frontier that unites the United States, Europe, and Israel against their enemies: Islam, communism, atheism, and other threats coming from the East. This is the cultural varnish that builds consent for the role of cannon fodder that Israel plays against the enemies of the imperialist powers in the Middle East - the nationalist or Islamic movements that restrict unrestricted Western access to the region’s natural resources, especially oil.
To justify their inclusion as “Westerners,” Jews - and therefore Israel - were classified as the guardians of the values of Western civilization because they had been the great victims of supposedly the greatest barbarism ever committed by Europeans. Although the Jewish Holocaust was not the greatest genocide in history when compared with the colonial exterminations carried out by Europeans themselves against Amerindian, African, and Asian peoples, it became exceptional because it was the first time such barbarism was committed inside Europe. This is the true exceptionality of the Shoah, which the promoters of the Holocaust Industry do not like to admit, in order to preserve the stigma of exceptionality that rests upon the Jews, their genocide, and their nation-state.12
As a result, what we observe is that the racist homogenization of Jews was not broken - there was merely an inversion of the sign, from negative to positive - with Israel’s integration into the imperialist structure led by the United States. This phenomenon is known as philosemitism: an innate support for and appreciation of Jews, normally manifested through support for the State of Israel. Thus Zionism did not break with the racist straitjacket that antisemitism imposed upon it; it merely fought for its place in the sun in the world of whites.
To do so, as the Palestinian Joseph Massad notes, it fulfilled the task of oppressing peoples seen as inferior to Jews in the global racial hierarchy - Arabs and Muslims.13 The racist structure that produced Nazism and the genocide of the Jews in Europe remains intact. The contemporary far right has merely replaced antisemitism with Islamophobia as the basis of its regime of racial supremacy. Israel plays a central role in this process.
Thus the Holocaust Industry is not concerned with undoing the racist vectors that originally led to the subjugation of Jews within Western modernity. Its mission is not universal, as it ought to be for those who safeguard the memory of one of the greatest genocides in history, but identitarian: centered on the defense of the permanence of the State of Israel as a central axis of Western imperialism and of Zionist elites as part of the ruling classes in nations such as the United States, France, and Brazil.
This, however, was not a unanimous project within Jewish communities, nor the only political alternative built by organized Judaism in the twentieth century. The imposition of Zionist hegemony over Jewish communities and the constitution of a common ideology about modern antisemitism were fundamental historical processes for the success of the Holocaust Industry and the political rise of Zionist elites in these countries and in the world. Israel’s capacity for colonial advance over the Middle East was combined with Zionist suppression of communist Jewish segments in the context of the Cold War.
Zionist Hegemony over Judaism and the Role of the Holocaust Industry
At the end of the nineteenth century, the Austro-Hungarian journalist Theodor Herzl, after covering the Dreyfus Affair14 in France, reached the conclusion that the assimilation of Jews into European liberal democracies would be impossible because of the structural antisemitism of those societies. For Herzl, the solution would be a Jewish exodus through the colonization of a virgin land. “A land without a people for a people without a land,” says the Zionist slogan. This, however, was not the only understanding Jews developed regarding the racial discrimination to which they were subjected in Europe.
Among the Jewish working classes, internationalist socialism, which defended the end of states and classes, was the chief force mobilizing hearts and minds. This was especially true in Tsarist Russia, where Jews lived under a kind of apartheid, subjected to segregation in the so-called Pale of Settlement and exposed to constant lynchings - the pogroms. One result was the formation of the Bund - the General Jewish Labour Bund in Lithuania, Poland and Russia - in 1897.15
The Bund defended a cultural nationalism that claimed autonomy for Yiddish culture amid the issues of the Russian workers’ movement. It preached the principle of doikayt, or hereness: the idea that Jews should involve themselves in struggles against oppression where they lived, together with other non-Jewish workers, rather than engage in the formation of a Jewish territorial state elsewhere, as the Zionist movement advocated. Faced with the advance of the Zionist colonization of Palestine, the Bund rejected Zionism in 1901. It was believed that the struggle for emancipation was universal, not exclusive to Jews.
Beyond the Bund, many Jews became involved in the Russian workers’ cause and took part in the revolutions of 1905 and 1917, among them Leon Trotsky. The Bund remained an important party until the Russian Revolution, when Lenin ordered - mistakenly - its dissolution in order to prevent what he understood as divisions within the workers’ movement. The Polish Bund remained relevant until the Second World War, playing a leading role in resistance to the Nazi occupation, especially in the Warsaw Ghetto Uprising in 1943.
In Jewish communities around the world, including the United States and Brazil, Bundist anti-Zionist communism remained a relevant ideology even after the creation of the State of Israel. In Brazil, the Brazilian Communist Party (PCB) maintained a Jewish sector from the 1930s onward. Casa do Povo was created in Sao Paulo in 1946 as an antifascist front led by communist Jews and with the participation of socialist Zionists. Conib, founded in 1948, was not born as a mere representative of the Israeli lobby in Brazil, but as an expressive body of the plurality of national Judaism.
In the United States, many Jewish organizations, such as the American Council for Judaism, were not Zionist and defended integration into US society. In 1947, the United States government supported the UN Partition Plan for Palestine skeptically, fearing displeasure both from oil-rich Arab nations and from its Jewish voters. The State of Israel itself, in its early years, was not fully aligned with the West either.
Besides being ideologically socialist, many Israelis admired the Soviet Union for its role in defeating Nazism and, especially, in liberating the concentration camps. The Soviets were also fundamental in the approval of the Partition of Palestine, contributing not only their own vote but also those of Ukraine and Belarus. Still in 1948, had it not been for the sale of Czech arms to Israel, under Soviet authorization, the Israelis might have been defeated in the Arab-Israeli War. In addition, Israel’s policy of nonalignment in its first decade of existence earned the country an invitation to the Bandung Conference in 1955.16
It was Israel’s transformation into a military asset that changed history and built the hegemony of Zionism over Judaism - as well as giving birth to the Holocaust Industry, Finkelstein shows. The might displayed in the Sinai Campaign against Egypt in 1956 was still the target of harsh criticism from the Jewish establishment in the United States, which saw Israel as a rogue nation. Finkelstein notes, however, that these same people became defenders of the Jewish state when the United States decided to cement the alliance after the Israeli victory in the Six-Day War in 1967. The author correctly observes that an Israel at peace with its Arab neighbors or, still more, integrated into the Third World movement, would have no utility for the United States. On the contrary, it might even become an enemy, as pan-Arabism had.
From then on, US Jewish leaders, who had served as a source for denouncing communist Jews to McCarthyite persecution, began to be invited to the White House to discuss the national interest with the president. Soon Israel became their religion. An important passage in the book comes when Finkelstein notes how this movement toward Zionism coincides with the distancing of Jewish elites from the civil rights movement at the end of the 1960s, at the moment when that movement began to take up economic demands in defense of affirmative action. Included, however imperfectly, in whiteness, the Jewish elites - now converted to Zionism - could afford to take reactionary positions against the US antiracist movement, even though its demands ultimately helped combat real antisemitism.
From a strategic point of view, it became more advantageous to assume the Zionist posture that antisemitism was an atavistic evil of the gentile world, especially visible in the Middle East. Hamas is not the first enemy of Israel to be classified as neo-Nazi, a position already occupied by Nasser during the 1950s and 1960s. In the Israeli and Western press and in European diplomacy itself, it was common for Nasser to be represented as the “Hitler on the Nile.”17 In a 1963 letter addressed to the president of the United States, John F. Kennedy, the Israeli premier David Ben-Gurion stated that “Nasser is, in fact, adopting the national-socialist ideology of the Nazis” and recalled that “for many years the civilized world did not take seriously” Hitler’s statements about the intention to exterminate the Jews, warning that something similar could happen to Israel if Nasser obtained a military victory.18
In Brazil, the 1964 coup was a milestone in the division between the Jewish establishment, which was becoming increasingly Zionist and wished to maintain good relations with the federal government, and the communist sectors of the Jewish working class, which resisted the military dictatorship. In Sao Paulo, the combination of the Jewish community’s socioeconomic rise, which led to an exodus from the working-class neighborhood of Bom Retiro, the strengthening of Zionist ideology after 1967, and military repression of communist movements resulted, for example, in the closure of Casa do Povo in the early 1980s.19 The Jewish communist movement always gave pride of place to the partisans’ resistance to Nazifascism. Yet this narrative was replaced by that of the Holocaust Industry fabricated in the United States as the organized non-Zionist segment of the Jewish community was dismantled.
This hegemony of Zionism over Jewish identity reinforced only one way of being Jewish in the world: submitting to the interests of the Israeli nation. In practice, this means complicity with Jewish territorial expansionism in Palestine and the elimination of its native people. In the background, all the Jews of the world would be educated with the idea that Israel represents a final refuge in the event of a new Holocaust. This idea, completely alienated from reality, ignores how Israel is the most dangerous place in the world to be Jewish - not, however, as a victim of antisemitism, but as a settler subjected to the violence arising from Palestinian anticolonial resistance.
Thus the manipulation of Holocaust memory and of the accusation of antisemitism becomes a fundamental instrument for maintaining Zionist hegemony over Western nations and their Jewish communities. Non-Jews, except those who are extremely Zionist, are idealized as atavistically antisemitic: all Arabs, especially Islamic groups, would be new incarnations of an irrational and cruel evil that hates Jews out of a supposed envy of their being the “chosen people,” like Hitler and Ramses II.20
For Zionism, hatred of Jews would be an incorrigible evil, and there would be no alternative but to shut oneself inside an exclusively Jewish “Sparta” against the enemies who wish to eliminate Jews from the face of the earth. This Judeopessimism - to borrow the analogy with “Afropessimist” ideology,21 which makes a similar judgment about anti-Black racism in the world - renounces the universalism that always guided Jewish humanist ethics in favor of the exclusionary and genocidal particularism of the State of Israel.
Overcoming Zionist Particularism toward a Jewish-Palestinian Universalism
At the beginning of 2026, I attended two ceremonies on the same Shabbat - one on Friday night and the other on Saturday morning - in two different synagogues in Sao Paulo. For that reason, the same parashah was read, that is, the weekly portion of the Torah. The parashah dealt with the moment when God chooses Moses to lead the Israelites in liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt.
On Friday night, the debate turned on the idea of the “chosen people.” This concept is particularly relevant to the Holocaust Industry, because the atavistic antisemitism of the gentiles would be grounded in an incorrigible envy of Jewish exceptionality. Finkelstein recalls very well how the idea of superiority forms part of the upbringing of most Jews in the world. A passage he retrieves from the US writer Philip Roth is revealing of the identitarianism that constitutes secular Jewish formation: what a Jewish American child inherits is “no body of law, no body of learning, and no language, and finally, no Lord... but a kind of psychology: and that psychology can be translated into three words: ‘Jews are better.’”
Finkelstein also recalls some of the arguments I myself have heard throughout my life to justify this superiority. Among them are the number of Nobel prizes received by Jews; the entrepreneurial spirit of Jews, particularly Israelis, imbued with chutzpah,22 who built a wealthy nation in a few decades; and their overrepresentation in prestigious sectors such as law and medicine - the Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, considered one of the best in the world, is the crown jewel of Sao Paulo’s Jewish community.
I recognize this identitarianism in my own formation, especially in the preference for Jewish comedians and their caustic, ironic, self-deprecating humor. On this idea of the “chosen people,” an old Jewish joke says:
Before Hashem [God], the believer asks: “Is it true that we are Your Chosen People?”
“Claro”, responde Deus.
“Of course,” God replies.
“Then isn’t it about time to choose someone else?” the insolent one retorts.
The joke expresses the contradictory feeling of the Jew at being the “chosen people.” The rabbi, however, offered a new interpretation of this concept. The idea of being chosen does not mean being special and therefore superior to others. Jews would be chosen to carry a message of liberation against the slavery imposed by the Egyptians on the Israelites and on other peoples. Yet, as with the history of the Holocaust, the memory of slavery in ancient Egypt also erases non-Jewish victims. The Nubians, in present-day Sudan, the Libyans, the Levantines, and the Canaanites - inhabitants of territories corresponding to present-day Palestine/Israel, Lebanon, Jordan, and Syria - were other peoples enslaved as a consequence of wars or acquired through trade.
God would have chosen the Israelites, especially Moses, to confront the pharaoh and liberate the Hebrew people, leading them during the exodus to the Promised Land. But, as the second rabbi rightly pointed out in the discussion of the parashah on Saturday morning, it was not only the Israelites who were freed, but all those enslaved by the pharaoh. And all those who had no refuge in their native land came to settle in the Promised Land alongside the Israelites. By this reading of the biblical events, ancient Israel would therefore have been a land of liberation from slavery for all peoples subjected to captivity in ancient Egypt. That is, it represented the principle of universality, which came to ground Jewish humanist ethics, and not an exclusively Jewish enclave of antiquity.
Yet, as Karl Marx notes, “history repeats itself, first as tragedy, then as farce.”23 Millennia later, when Jews were again subjected to slavery, now by the Nazis, and sought to reconstitute Israel as their refuge of freedom, the superimposition of Zionist particularism over the universalist principle of the Jewish humanist tradition made modern Israel a farce. The Zionist representation of the world as atavistically antisemitic - reinforced day and night by the Holocaust Industry - presents the exclusivist enclosure of Jews in their state as the only alternative, to the detriment of the life and dignity of the other.
The French Jewish philosopher Emmanuel Levinas saw in Judaism the possibility of realizing a universalism, for it had introduced values of justice and social responsibility, constituting the exercise of religion as an ethical responsibility for the other. Imprisoned by Nazism during the occupation of France in 1939, the philosopher became a major critic of European nationalisms, which impose limits on human ethics. He does not, however, assume an anti-Zionist posture, for he sees historical importance in the refounding of Israel, provided that this does not reduce Judaism to a nationalism or make Jewish identity exclusivist.24
The history of modern Israel might even have been different, though still problematic, had it reproduced the same logic as ancient Israel and sheltered all the victims of the Holocaust: Roma, people with disabilities, Black people, LGBTQIA+ people, and communists. Although the Palestinians would still have been subjected to a European colonial process, the plurality of the groups that would have composed that society would probably have prevented the realization of the Zionist project of racial supremacy seen in the State of Israel.
Returning from counterfactual history to real Zionism in Palestine, the humanist and universalist ethics Levinas saw in the Jewish tradition was replaced, with Zionist hegemony over all ways of being Jewish in the world, by an identitarian exclusivism enclosed in an ultramilitarized state, guided by racist ideals of a “clash of civilizations” against Arab and Muslim nations. As Levinas feared, Judaism was reduced to Zionism, and Jewish identity became sealed within itself.
Judith Butler turns to Levinas in order to subvert him in relation to the Palestinian question, radicalize his thought, and elaborate, together with the thought of other Jewish intellectuals such as Hannah Arendt, what she classifies as the “diasporic” Jewish tradition: grounded in the relation with other non-Jewish peoples; rooted in an ethical tradition that is not limited to its own identity group; critical of absolute state sovereignty; and defensive of cohabitation25 among different peoples as the basic condition of politics.26
This “diasporic” Zionism, still seen on the margins of Jewish communities around the world that resist Zionist policing, would be Butler’s way of bringing the secular humanist Jewish tradition into the present. The US philosopher points out that Israel has become an exception to this diasporic tradition and calls for Judaism to abandon the national exclusivism that characterizes Zionism. That is, she defends anti-Zionism as a position grounded in the diasporic Jewish tradition, as a way to elaborate a Jewish critique of Israel and build reconciliation with the Palestinians. Yet she stresses the need, at the same time, to deny the exceptionality of Jewish criticism of Israel in order to prevent the construction of a new form of Jewish particularity.
The violence to which Israel subjects the Palestinian people has placed them in a situation of constant revolutionary struggle for freedom. Today, the centrality that the Palestinian Question has for the world makes the Palestinian people emulate the position of the “chosen people” charged with carrying the message of universal liberation. Jewish emancipation will therefore come from a reunion with this message and from active engagement with the Palestinian cause. That is, through a break with Zionist particularism and the true recognition of the humanity of the other before any national or religious belonging, as the Jewish humanist principle preaches.
Butler demonstrates that the realization of a legitimate universality involves combating false multiculturalisms that conceal the colonial character of the Palestinian situation, as well as facing the concrete plurality that constitutes the peoples who cohabit the same territory without homogenizing their identities. This requires the conjunction of Jewish and Palestinian national identities in the formation of a new form of common anticolonial political identification, liberating and egalitarian.
Her project makes clear the scale of the challenge facing the movement to decolonize the territory of Palestine, which implicitly includes the decolonization of Judaism from Zionism. A first step toward a process that is universal and emancipatory for all is to undo the lies built by the Holocaust Industry and recognize the histories and humanities of all oppressed peoples: those of ancient Egypt, of the Nazi Holocaust, and of the Israeli genocide. For this reason, Finkelstein’s work is a fundamental contribution for those who struggle for the liberation of Palestine.
