If You Take a Great Big Bite of Gangwon Province’s Summer

In Gangwon, summer is not merely a season for travel or scenery but a season of harvest, labor, and the foods that carry the region’s life in them.

When one speaks of “the harvest season,” autumn is what commonly comes to mind, but in the Gangwon region it is summer that is truly the season of harvest. In June, as the summer green deepens, white potato blossoms burst open like falling snow all along the densely packed furrows; and by the summer solstice, when the sun is said to shine longer than on any other day of the year, clear-skinned haji potatoes, like the morning sun, are lifted from the earth at the tips of farmers’ wrinkled fingers. Across the broad lands of southern Yeongseo, corn that has grown as tall as an adult ripens to gold, while in the cool highlands, even in midsummer, radishes and napa cabbages shoot up vigorously. At night, when even the sun has gone to sleep, stout-bottomed cabbages are carried away between pairs of work gloves pulled firmly over both hands.

- What Is Hidden by the Words “Everyone Has It Hard Just the Same” [Inside the Nation] People living amid overlapping inequalities did not define their own circumstances as “inequality.” This was the greatest irony I had seen in the course of reporting on inequality. - If You Take a Great Big Bite of Gangwon Province’s Summer [Inside the Nation] Some people may remember Gangwon’s East Coast in summer as a resort destination. But the “language of flowers” I have seen on the summer East Coast is labor. The East Coast is busy in summer. The squid-fishing boats that lit up the distant sea all night, when the sky...
